Wiz, I've never heard of playing baseball in boots either, but given the lack of jumping, that would seem slightly more feasible than basketball. At this point I suspect I'm missing some British joke or cultural reference, but this presumably doesn't refer to Boots the chemist or the storage boots of motor vehicles, and that exhausts my knowledge of UK-specific boots. Google, as usual, was no help at all.

Jim, I don't think there's anything subtle about it. Baseball boots were popular in the 60s or 70s...just like sneakers but high over ankles. I always thought they actually had something to do with baseball. What were they called in the USI wonder?

Ah, thanks. That is, literally and figuratively, more pedestrian than what I'd guessed. In the US we called those high-tops, whereas we use boots to refer to the thick, heavy footwear worn by hikers and construction workers, for example.
