@asylumrunner, it's not obnoxious, the grid is clearly marked as British, so expect British phrasing and references. "Candy" is an American term.

I did add 'candy' as an option for our American puzzlers, not sure why it didn't work for you. I've checked it and it works for me.

Excellent grid.
I thought the messengers group was inspired, though perhaps the use of both Hermes and Mercury, i.e. the same entity, may be a tad lazy? Perhaps Melinda might have worked?
