Aren't day and hour interchangeable? I know 'top of the morning' is the traditional phrase but I'm sure I've heard 'top of the day' used, certainly more than 'top of the hour'.

If you try to google "top of the day" it redirects you to " top of the morning" so I don't think it is really interchangeable- top of the hour is well known, to me at least, as the start of the hour, on the dot.

It's a well known expression used in little explored areas of the Amazon where villagers rarely see people from the outside world.
