Bartleby isn't a Dickens character. He's Herman Melville from his novel Bartleby the Scrivener. Very like Dickens, but not.

Bartleby is a very well-known Melville character, as mentioned. I finally solved the puzzle by shrugging and figuring, "Maybe there's a character named Bartleby in some Dickens novel? Whatevs."
