Great ideas and really tricky, but Hilary and Jane can be swapped over between their two groups (Jane Austen- author, Hilary Brougher- film director, rather than your designation of Hilary Mantel and Jane Champion), so there's more than one valid solution to the grid, which makes it unsolvable, except by pure luck, or being a mind-reader.

@Malcontent - thanks for the feedback. I did worry that there was more than one solution, I thought I'd thought of everything but I've never heard of Hilary Brougher. I'll change it next chance I get.
