Minor ask, but didn't recognise "coins" for the shillings one and "pronunciation" for the names one - though maybe my fault for not doing more thorough answers for the clues!

DMG -
thanks for letting me know.
I think I put in currency and money and pronounce and pronounced, I will go ahead and add those.

Thanks for posting

BTW I tried the names on pals in Connecticut some years ago.
Got the "how, why" from them.
Then tried the "rules of cricket for foreigners" game.
Well it was a rainy day :-)

Don
good but footballer Ian St. John's name was not pronounced Sinjin
(3 years ago)

clairebee
hi Don,
I think it’s because it’s pronounced that name when it’s a given name, not a surname.

clairebee
thanks all!
Found this, a good explanation of why it’s pronounced Sinjun

English forenames or surnames which include the the St or saint usually entered the English language from French many centuries ago. Examples would be StJean or StClair. They were originally pronounced the French way - then lightly anglicised to to sin-jin or sinclair.

Freddgar,
oddly enough, I can tell when something is just not quite cricket, but I couldn’t tell you what cricket actually is.

St John
Fun, and yes people have often been confused with my name.🙂

St. John
that gave you an insider advantage! You are the first Saint John I’ve ever met.
I’m sure they come up with some pretty interesting variations on your name at Starbucks
