To make it clearer...

Numbers, Romans, Job, Ruth: “Book” or “Bible”
Christmas, Laugh, Leg, Straw: “Last”
Queue, Why, Owe, Sea: “Letter”
Fleet, Bow, Coventry, Dong: “Street” or “Monopoly”

They just needed the right words in them.

I made a mistake when typing “Bond” and wrote it as “Dong”. I don’t know how I did that. Don’t let it put you off.

Interesting looking back... I think contemporary grids tend to be a lot tougher, and of course would get battered for having old chestnuts like these in. Ok for beginners but needed more crossovers (a phrase my phone has now learnt)

homonyms of i c y etc is a valid answer! 'sounds like letters' is the v dumb version

me, homonyms might sound clever, but it's not right (you're thinking of homophones). "Sounds like letters" has the virtue of being correct.
