If Avon is a county, then neither Yorkshire nor Sussex are. When Avon was created, Sussex and Yorkshire were divided into separate counties.

Was thrown a little by Gloucester being spelled Gloster?

Not only Yorkshire and Sussex, but also Avon and Cleveland are now defunct as counties, hence the link.

"Gloster" is spelled that way in my copy of Shakespeare's works - a rather old one. It was probably a mistake not to amend that.
